Speech Therapy

Speech Therapy ServiceSpeech therapy includes the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to speech, language, cognition, swallowing, voice and fluency.  Clients treated may present with
issues such as stuttering, difficulty swallowing, harsh or strained voice, or difficulty comprehending and producing language.  Cognitive aspects of communication may
involve attention, memory, and problem solving. The above disorders are frequently caused by strokes or other acquired brain injuries.

At Helping Hands Therapy, the therapist creates an individualized plan of care, tailored to the client’s specific needs. A speech therapy session may involve training a client how to make sounds, improve their voice, or increase their oral or written language skills to communicate more effectively.   Other initiatives may include teaching clients how to strengthen muscles or use compensatory strategies to swallow without choking or inhaling food or liquid.

The goal of treatment is to aid a client in regaining communication and/or swallowing abilities to return to as close to a prior level of function as possible.  Counseling individuals and their families concerning communication disorders and how to cope with the challenges they impose is also an integral part of treating the whole person.

Some of the common speech impairments that we treat are:

  • Communication Disorders -eg. Stroke, Brain Injury, Aphasia, Apraxia, Cognition
  • Oral-Motor Deficit
  • Stuttering
